More visitors to Ningaloo

A new aggregation of feeding whalesharks has been discovered off Ningaloo Reef. The group of around 25 sharks has been seen feeding at the surface on krill near the Murion Islands.

“At this stage, it was clear from observations and plankton samples collected the sharks were in the area due to the abundance of food on the surface of the water, however we are unsure if this feeding aggregation is a unique event or a common occurrence at night when no-one is there to witness it,” said the Department of Environment and Coservation’s (DEC) Exmouth whale shark conservation officer Emily Wilson.

After the discovery, the DEC asked boaters in the area to take care around the Murion Islands to avoid boat strikes.
